A great way to learn method ringing on tower bells

Starting with your first bell handling lesson, the scheme helps you handle a bell safely, acquire solid foundation skills and by Level 5 your ringing will be at the standard where you will be able to progress quickly in the exciting and diverse world of method ringing.

To complete the scheme, you will ring at least five extended pieces of ringing, known as quarter peals, which typically take 50 minutes to complete. Quarter peals are internationally recognised and recorded on BellBoard. Why not click on the BellBoard link and have a look at what other ringers are doing. It’s a real eye-opener!

What is method ringing?

Have a listen to these YouTube videos and notice the difference in pitch (which is related to bell weight) and speed of the ringing. You might ring a quarter peal of Grandsire Doubles, as in the first video, as part of your Level 4 or Level 5.

The five Learning the Ropes Levels

Level 1

Ensures you have a strong basic technique, which is important, not only for safety, but in order to facilitate your future progress.

Level 2

Builds the core skills that you need to competently ring with others. Foundation skills should be practised until they are automatic.

Level 3

Moves you on from being told which changes to ring to having to learn them. You will start by ringing the treble and by covering to methods.

Level 4

Reinforces and builds on the skills developed in Level 3. You will progress to ringing methods as part of your band of ringers.

Level 5

The final level in the Learning the Ropes scheme, Level 5 guides you through to confidently ringing more complex methods.

How does the scheme work?

You will be enrolled on the scheme by your ART ringing teacher, who will supply you with your Ringers Personal Progress Logbook and register you on the scheme, which will allow you to monitor your progress and give you access to a large number of learning resources.

If you don’t have an ART ringing teacher, logbooks are available from the ART online shop. The logbook will enable you to record your personal ringing achievements and help you plan your future targets and objectives.

Learning the Ropes is taught by ART Members and teachers who are working towards ART accreditation. All ART Members have completed one or more Modules of the ART Teaching Scheme, which involves a one-day instruction course followed by up to two years skill development before a final assessment of their teaching. Those who have completed accreditation and become ART Members have also been DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked when they work with young people.
